“Matter” is a story of life and death. While the male depicted in the painting is dying, he is embracing the woman who is vibrant and full of life. Likewise, they are holding flowers, which are full of life, but have been cut and will therefore die shortly. This painting is a juxtaposition of life, grown, maturity, decline, and death. The essence of “Matter” is the essence of life and death.
